  • NYSSCAN gathered people for a fun and exciting art event. We painted with our graduate art therapy student specialist, Akimie Worrell. Participants received a personally autographed SCD tool kit.

MAY 4 — Sickle Cell Awareness: Community Resources and Information for Families, Friends and Individuals Living with Sickle Cell Disease or the Trait

  • Informational session for sickle cell disease and the trait. A wealth of resources will be available for those that are affected with sickle cell or have a loved one with the disease.

  • NYSSCAN, in collaboration with the Jam Master Jay Foundation for Youth, held a celebration for the 7 principles of Kwanzaa in which the participants enjoyed fun and games with children.

  • This event included Essay readings, book reading, Music, Poetry, Dancing, Face painting, Giveaways, Prizes

JANUARY 17 — 2016 Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

  • NYSSCAN presented an information session about sickle cell disease at the Linden school. The service program also included a panel discussion on the topic: “What are you doing for others?”

APRIL 15-16 — 2016 Annual Sickle Cell Advocacy Day

  • NYSSCAN and other chapters met with members of Congress to lobby for funding for SCD.

APRIL 20 — Get to Know Sickle Cell Disease: Talk with the Experts

  • NYSSCAN in collaboration with York College Division of Student Development launched this annual event.

APRIL 26 — NYSSCAN Art Extravaganza

  • NYSSCAN provided an art experience workshop for Sickle Cell adolescents and young adults age of 16-25 with art therapy student specialist, Akimie Worrell.

JUNE 19 — 2016 World Sickle Cell Awareness Day

  • NYSSCAN hosted its annual World Sickle Cell Awareness Day Festival. Different healthcare providers were available for free screenings. Guest speakers from Lehman College, Long Island University, and Dr. Guobadia all spoke about sickle cell disease. Food from different cultures was served. We were entertained by a mime praise dance performance as well as face painting for the kids and a DJ provided world music.

JULY 27 — Queens Hospital Center

  • NYSSCAN hosted their annual bake sale. We provided baked goods, water, and juice. We also provided our Walk-A-Thon flyer and NYSSCAN informational pamphlets to the customers; picking up several that had a close family member or friend that had the trait or the disease itself.

SEPTEMBER 10 — 2016 Annual Walk-A-Thon

  • In partnership with York College

  • Joined by a host of public and private supporters, NYSSCAN drew media attention (channel 4 and NY1) to our annual Walk-A-Thon for Sickle Cell Disease awareness that began at York College in Jamaica, Queens and ended in Roy Wilkins Park on Merrick Boulevard.

2017

JANUARY 16 — 2017 Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

  • The Get Connected Team from NYSSCAN also presented at this event to enroll people in GET Connected, the First National Sickle Cell Patient Powered Registry.

  • NYSSCAN presented an information session, panel discussion with community leaders about sickle cell. Individuals came together from all over the community and had an amazing time. Over 200 people attended and learned more about sickle cell disease.

FEBRUARY — Awareness on the Chronic Disease of Sickle Cell Anemia, Lupus, and Osteoarthritis

  • NYSSCAN joined with the Health Ministry for a summit to offer health screenings, flu shots, entertainment, and informational sessions about different diseases.

FEBRUARY 18 — 2017 Annual Sickle Cell Advocacy Day

  • NYSSCAN advocated for those affected by SCD and for the NYS Sickle Cell Treatment Act of 2015 - 2016. There was a free bus trip to Albany for those who wanted to join us in our advocacy. We met with NY State Senators and Assembly members, and participated in discussions. This took place at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, New York.

MARCH 4 — Queens Library’s “Women’s History Month Program” starring Ms. Gloria Rochester

  • The Founder of NYSSCAN, Ms. Gloria Rochester, was honored by QPL for “Women’s History Month Program.” She shared her story of years of advocacy for the sickle cell community. Over 120 people attended to appreciate and honor her hard work for the community.

MAY 27 — The National Museum of African American History & Culture Trip

  • NYSSCAN provided two loaded buses of family to The National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington D.C. The buses picked up family and individuals from our center, the New York State Sickle Cell Advocacy Network, INC.

  • NYSSCAN provided an unforgettable and wonderful event at the museum for the community. People gathered from Brooklyn and Queens to experience workshops at the museum. Individuals had a blast and said that they didn’t want the day to be over.

JUNE 16 — Sickle Cell Disease Symposium

  • NYSSCAN in collaboration with the Nassau County Commission on Human Rights presented a Sickle Cell Disease Symposium which took place at the Nassau County Executive Building Ceremonial Chambers.

  • NYSSCAN presented Keynote Speaker Dr. James T. D’Olimpio, Medical Oncology, Hematology, Hospice/Palliative Medicine, Internal Medicine. The presentation included a discussion about the characteristics of each disease as well as explanation about how they are inherited from parent to child. Over 50 supported the work that is being done in sickle cell and listened to the presentation.

AUGUST 19 — Rockaway Caribbean Carnival featuring NYSSCAN

  • NYSSCAN participated in the Rockaway Caribbean Carnival of 2017. The event provided a fun networking event for the community. The Mighty Sparrow, Calypso King of the World had a concert at the Caribbean Carnival. The parade started on Mott Avenue and Beach 20th Street and continued to Seagirt Blvd ending at the Beach 17th amphitheater in the park. There were youth performances, entertainment, and culturally related activities. Residents had the opportunity to participate in the festivities.

SEPTEMBER 9 — 2017 Annual Walk-A-Thon

  • NYSSCAN sponsored the National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. As part of its observances, the families and individuals of the New York State Sickle Cell Advocacy Network, Inc. are presenting the Annual Walk-A-Thon to bring awareness, education, and research about Sickle Cell Disease to the community at large.

  • Ms. Gloria Rochester and other supporters of sickle cell awareness (over 200 people) walked for sickle cell awareness, education, and research.

OCTOBER 14 — Sickle Cell Disease Symposium

  • NYSSCAN and other chapters of the Nassau County Commission on Human Rights came together and presented a speaker to talk more about sickle cell disease.

  • Featuring Keynote Speaker: Dr. Herold Duroseau, MD

  • Pediatrics- Hematology/Oncology

  • Together they launched a free symposium for families and individuals with SCD.

NOVEMBER 2 & 3 — Hunter A. Haymore Speech Collaboration

  • NYSSCAN collaborated with Hunter A. Haymore at Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College. Hunter shared her harrowing story and how she was ultimately cured of SCD.

  • Individuals and families from all over the country have joined in and enjoyed the speech.

MAY 25 — The Jamaica Ball 2019: The 8th Annual Party With a Purpose

  • Participants had 90% of the ticket profits go directly toward a non-profit of their choosing. Through this event, NYSSCAN fundraised for scholarship awards given to sickle cell individuals who, in spite of the challenges they face, are determined to achieve their academic goals in college.

JUNE 19 — 2019 World Sickle Cell Awareness Day 10th Anniversary: Shine the Light on Sickle Cell (10th Anniversary)

  • NYSSCAN partnered with NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens to host an Information and Awareness Fair and our official World Sickle Cell Awareness Day Program. We featured a number of vendors and health care experts who provided free educational material on sickle cell disease. This event raised awareness about the health and well-being of the sickle cell community with the help of stories, discussions, and more.
